The claim

By December 31, 2027, at least three additional major film or television studios or distributors (beyond A24) will publicly announce formal generative-AI research or tooling partnerships with a frontier AI lab — OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, Meta, xAI, or a comparable peer — structured on the template the A24-DeepMind deal established in June 2026: a strategic investment or research collaboration scoped to production tooling (storyboards, previsualization, visual effects, or workflow) rather than to generating finished films, with the studio retaining creative control.

For the reasoning behind why the structure of that first deal — not its dollar figure — is what gets copied, see Hollywood's AI Détente.

Why I expect it

The first deal de-risked the rest. Before A24-DeepMind, any studio approached by a frontier lab had to invent the terms from scratch and absorb the political risk of being first. Now there is a worked example with defensible terms — investment not acquisition, tools not finished films, and an explicit content-library data wall — that a studio can point to when its talent and unions ask hard questions. That lowers the cost of saying yes dramatically.

The supply side is motivated. With raw model capability converging across labs, the durable advantage is being embedded in specific industries with tools nobody else has tuned. Creative production is a marquee vertical, and the labs that lack a prestige creative partner have a clear incentive to find one rather than watch a competitor become the default tooling layer for an entire discipline. Expect OpenAI and Anthropic to want their own answers to the DeepMind-A24 deal.

The demand side is motivated too. Studios face real cost pressure in pre-production and visual effects, and the A24 framing gives them a way to pursue those efficiencies while staying on the defensible side of the labor argument. Multiple labs competing for partners also means better terms for the studios that move — which makes moving more attractive, not less.

What would make this true

  • Three or more distinct major studios or distributors (e.g. members of the major studio tier, large streamers, or prestige houses of A24's stature) each announce a frontier-lab partnership scoped to tooling rather than finished output.
  • The announcements are formal and public — press releases, SEC filings, or on-record executive confirmation — not rumors or unconfirmed reports.
  • The deals broadly mirror the A24 structure: investment or research collaboration, production-tooling scope, and creator/creative control retained.

What would falsify it

  • Stall after the first deal: A24-DeepMind remains a one-off and fewer than three additional qualifying studio-lab partnerships are announced by the end of 2027.
  • Wrong structure: studios adopt AI but via outright acquisitions, pure licensing of off-the-shelf models, or finished-content-generation deals that do not match the tools-not-films, creator-controlled template — the template would have failed to propagate even if AI adoption rose.
  • Backlash freeze: a high-profile labor dispute, lawsuit, or regulatory action makes studios pause visible lab partnerships through the target date.

Confidence

I put this at 72 percent. The strategic incentives on both sides point hard toward replication, and the existence of a defensible template removes the main barrier that kept earlier deals from happening. The real uncertainty is timing and threshold: whether three qualifying deals (not one or two) land publicly before the end of 2027, and whether they match the structural template closely enough to count. Adoption could easily happen through messier, less A24-shaped arrangements, which is exactly why this sits at tier 2 rather than tier 1.
