Reasoning and Analysis

The structural pressure is already visible and pointing one direction. Cursor's Origin, announced June 16, 2026 and slated to ship in fall 2026, is the first host designed around agent changesets rather than human pull requests. Once one host makes batched-changeset review and automated pre-screening the default, the others face a straightforward competitive forcing function: on teams where the majority of commits already originate from agents, the human pull request becomes the bottleneck, and a host that still treats every change as a person-sized diff is slower and harder to supervise than one that does not.

GitHub has the strongest incentive and the shortest path. It already owns the host, the review surface, and a vast Copilot install base; bolting an agent-native review mode onto pull requests is an increment, not a rebuild, and Microsoft has been reorganizing engineering inside GitHub precisely to move faster on coding agents. GitLab's self-hosting, sovereignty-minded base gives it a reason to ship a controllable agent-review surface as a feature rather than cede the category. The third slot — the agent-native entrant — is already shipping by definition.

The deeper driver is that agents change the unit of work. A pull request is sized for a human to read; an agent produces more change than a human can review one diff at a time. When that crossover passes on enough teams, the review surface has to change shape, and code hosts do not leave a structural gap like that open for long once a competitor has demonstrated the pattern.

What Would Make This Wrong

The prediction fails if, by the deadline, agent-native review remains an opt-in plugin or closed beta rather than a default on at least two of the three hosts; if only one host ships it; or if the dominant pattern stays "agents open ordinary pull requests" with no distinct batched-changeset primitive. It is also wrong if a backlash against autonomous agent commits — driven by a high-profile agent-introduced outage or a security incident — pushes teams back toward mandatory human-sized review, freezing the human pull request in place as the safety control. A slower-than-expected agent-authorship crossover (humans still writing most commits on most serious teams at the end of 2027) would also leave the forcing function too weak to make this default within the window.

Tracking Signals

Watch for: GitHub or GitLab announcing a non-pull-request agent review surface in general availability; the share of agent-authored commits on AI-forward teams crossing and holding above half; and whether Origin's batched-changeset model is copied rather than ignored by the incumbents in their 2027 roadmaps.
