By end of Q3 2027, a major analyst firm will publish a dedicated market category for agent gateways / AI agent authorization, distinct from API management and IAM

The prediction

In July 2026 the layer that governs production AI agents acquired a name. Arcade shipped an agent-authorization and tool-execution runtime through the Azure and AWS marketplaces; Forbes framed agent gateways as the emerging control plane for enterprise AI; and Microsoft committed billions to the enterprise deployment problem that this layer exists to solve. Naming precedes categorization, and categorization by the analyst firms is what turns a named layer into a budgeted line item.

By September 30, 2027, at least one of Gartner, Forrester, or IDC will publish a dedicated research artifact — a Magic Quadrant, Forrester Wave, IDC MarketScape, Market Guide, or equivalently named market-defining report — that treats "agent gateways," "AI agent authorization," or an "AI agent control plane" as a distinct market category with named vendors, rather than folding it into an existing API-management, API-security, or IAM/identity category.

The artifact must name the category as its primary subject and evaluate multiple vendors within it. A passing mention of agents inside an existing API-management Magic Quadrant does not count; the category itself must be the unit of analysis. A dedicated "Market Guide for AI Agent Security" or "Wave for Agent Authorization Platforms" that positions vendors would satisfy it.

Why 68 percent confidence

The direction is well supported. Analyst firms move to define a category once three conditions hold: a named layer, a set of distinct vendors competing for it, and enterprise buyers asking "who do I buy this from." All three are already forming. The layer is named. The vendor set spans specialist startups (Arcade and peers), the hyperscalers positioning native services, and the identity and API-gateway incumbents extending their control planes to cover agents. And the buyer question is live, because the demo-to-production wall — which is an authorization wall — is the single most common blocker enterprises report. When capability becomes a commodity, as the July 9 dual frontier release confirmed it has, spend and analyst attention migrate to the governance layer. Fourteen-plus months is ample time for at least one firm to plant a flag, and being first to name a hot category is exactly the competitive move analyst firms make.

Confidence is held at 68 rather than higher for two reasons. First, categorization is a judgment call about boundaries, and the incumbents have a strong incentive to argue that agents are simply a new principal type inside existing API-security and IAM categories — which, if the analysts accept it, would mean the layer gets absorbed rather than named separately, falsifying this prediction even as the underlying technology thrives. Second, analyst category timing is genuinely hard to predict; a firm may wait until 2028 for the vendor landscape to consolidate before committing a flagship report, publishing only a lighter "emerging technology" note in the interim that would not clearly meet the bar. The technology trend is near-certain; what is uncertain is whether the naming lands inside this specific window and as a genuinely separate category.

What would prove this right

A Gartner Magic Quadrant, Forrester Wave, or IDC MarketScape whose title and scope center on agent gateways, agent authorization, or an AI agent control plane, evaluating named vendors, published on or before September 30, 2027. A dedicated Gartner Market Guide or Innovation Guide for the category, with a representative-vendor list, also qualifies.

What would prove this wrong

The window closes with agent authorization still treated only as a sub-theme inside API-management, API-security, or IAM research — vendors evaluated, if at all, as entries in those existing categories rather than in a market defined around the agent control plane itself. A scattering of blog-tier analyst commentary without a formal market-defining artifact would also count as a miss.
