Inside the crate, nestled in custom foam cutouts, lay fifty Nvidia H200 GPUs. Each one worth forty thousand dollars retail. On the black market? Triple that. Maybe more, now that the Americans had started their crackdown.

"As of last week," Lin repeated, his tone carrying a warning.
Maya knew what he meant. Operation Gatekeeper had happened two days ago. Fifty million dollars in seized GPUs, three arrests across Texas and New York, and suddenly everyone in their line of work was looking over their shoulders.
The DOJ press release had been explicit: anyone caught smuggling AI chips to sanctioned territories would face twenty years minimum. No plea deals. No leniency.
Maya had read it three times, then deleted her Signal conversations, burned her old SIM cards, and considered retirement. Thirty-eight years old, ten years in the game, maybe it was time to disappear to some beach in Bali and never touch another GPU.

"The times were complicated before. Now they're dangerous. You understand the premium that entails?"
"I understand you're asking eight million for hardware that costs two million retail." His expression didn't change. "The risk premium is acknowledged. But I need assurances that these chips are clean. No tracking, no telemetry, no surprises."
Maya had been expecting this question. Two days ago, she would have laughed it off—GPUs were dumb hardware, bits of silicon and copper that did what you told them and nothing more. But the intel she'd received from her contact at Nvidia had changed things.
"Show him," she told Lin.
Lin opened his laptop, bringing up a technical diagram. "As of last week, Nvidia's rolling out a new firmware update for all H100 and H200 series GPUs. It's mandatory for cloud deployments, recommended for enterprise."
"And?" The buyer leaned forward.
"And it includes geolocation verification. The GPUs phone home with their IP address, report their location. U.S. government gets real-time access to a database of every single chip and where it's operating."
The buyer's expression flickered. Just for a moment, but Maya caught it. Fear.

"For now," the buyer said. "What happens when Nvidia pushes a firmware update?"
"Air-gap your systems. Never connect them to the internet. Run your training runs offline, transfer data via physical media." Maya watched his face. "Or you hire someone like Lin to modify the firmware. Strip out the tracking code. The buyer stood silent for a long moment. Maya could see the calculation playing out behind his eyes. Eight million dollars was a lot of money, but this wasn't just about money anymore. This was about sovereignty. About whether China could build competitive AI models without American permission.
"I'll take them," he said finally. "But I'm paying six million, not eight. The firmware issue reduces their value."
Maya almost laughed. "Six million? These are the last clean chips you're going to see. Once the tracking rollout completes, every H200 on the planet becomes a liability. These are artifacts from before the surveillance state embedded itself in silicon."
