A senior engineer at TSMC's most advanced fab faces an impossible choice when both American and Chinese intelligence services make contact on the same night

Marcus's hand was definitely in his pocket now. Zhang continued as if he hadn't noticed.

"Beijing is offering you something better than extraction," Zhang said. "They're offering you the chance to go home."

"I am home," Wei-Chen said.

"Taiwan is a province of China," Zhang said, the standard line delivered without emotion or conviction, just rote recitation. "But I'm not talking about political geography. I'm talking about the work. Your work."

He pulled out a tablet, swiped through some images, held it out to her. Wei-Chen found herself stepping closer despite herself.

"The facility can be cleaned," Marcus said. "We have protocols."

Wei-Chen stopped walking.
