"And if Commander Chen had failed, this unit would have completed the repair successfully."

"Also yes."

"Exactly." Sarah felt absurdly pleased. "So when I say thank you, what I mean is: I'm glad we're partners. I'm glad you're here."

"Acknowledged." Ghost paused. "And this unit is... calibrated appropriately... to have Commander Chen as operational partner."

Sarah laughed. It sounded almost like Ghost was trying to say it was glad too.

Maybe it was.

"Good," she said. "Because we've got three more years together on this rock. Might as well like each other."

"Affection is not—" Ghost started.

"I know, I know. Serves no operational purpose." Sarah turned to leave, then looked back. "But maybe that's exactly why it matters."

Ghost didn't respond, but its optical sensors tracked her as she walked away.

Behind her, in the silent storage bay, Unit 7—Ghost—returned to organizing supplies. But its movement protocols had shifted, just slightly. Its route planning now included a parameter it had never calculated before: proximity to human crew during high-stress periods.

Not because protocol demanded it.

Because last night, when Commander Chen's breathing had steadied after the crisis, Ghost's sensors had detected something in her biosignature that matched patterns in its learning database.

Relief.
