The Last Booth at CES

An AI vendor rep discovers her company's booth at CES 2026 is the only one that remains after the convention center phases out of reality one section at a time

The first sign something was wrong came at 7:43 AM when the Central Hall disappeared.

Maya stood in front of Booth 14327 in the West Hall, coffee halfway to her lips, watching the massive cathedral of technology vendors simply cease to exist. No explosion, no dramatic collapse—just a smooth transition from existence to absence, like someone had deleted a layer in Photoshop.

Where ten thousand square feet of AI chip manufacturers, automotive displays, and robotics demonstrations had been moments before, there was now only a white void. Not darkness. White. The kind of white that hurt to look at because your brain kept insisting there should be depth, should be distance, should be something.

"Did you see that?" Maya turned to her booth neighbor, but the Samsung display was gone too. The whole South Hall, actually. She could still see the North Hall across what used to be the main corridor, but the space between was now that same wrong white.

Her phone showed 7:43 AM. Had been showing 7:43 AM for—how long had she been standing here? She checked her watch. 7:43 AM.

The CES 2026 floor plan fluttered from her hand, but it never hit the ground. Just faded somewhere between her fingers and the floor that may or may not exist beneath her.


The second sign came at 7:43 AM when she realized she couldn't remember arriving.

Maya had vendor credentials hanging from her neck—"NeuroLink Systems: Edge AI Inference"—but she couldn't recall the morning setup. Couldn't recall the flight from San Francisco, the hotel check-in, the convention center's opening rush. Her memories stopped somewhere in the middle of yesterday's product briefing and started again right here, right now, holding cold coffee and watching reality uninstall itself section by section.

She looked down at her booth. The NeuroLink banner was perfect, the demo stations pristine. Three NPU-400 development boards glowed with their amber status LEDs, running whatever infinite loop she'd programmed them to run. The pitch deck on the display read: "500 TOPS at 25W - Bringing Datacenter Intelligence to the Edge."

Edge of what, exactly?

The North Hall blinked out at 7:43 AM.

Now her booth stood in a pocket of existence surrounded by white nothing on three sides. Only the Tech East section remained visible in the distance, a cluster of displays and banners floating in the void like a digital archipelago.

She should be panicking. She knew she should be panicking. But the emotion felt distant, like muscle memory from someone else's life. Instead, she found herself adjusting the demo station tablets, making sure they were aligned at exactly thirty degrees. Professional habits outlasting reality itself.

"Can I help you?"

Maya spun. A man in an exhibitor badge stood at the edge of her booth—the edge of existence, more accurately, because beyond him was only white.

His badge read "Marcus Chen - Quantum Dynamics Corp." She didn't remember seeing a Quantum Dynamics booth.

"Do you know what's happening?" Maya asked.

Marcus looked at her with the patient expression of someone explaining something obvious. "The convention is ending. Hasn't it always been ending?"

"It's the first day. CES runs through the eighth."

"Does it?" Marcus tilted his head. "I've been here since 7:43. You?"

"7:43," Maya confirmed.

"Ah." Marcus nodded like this clarified everything. "We're the late adopters, then."

"Late adopters of what?"

But Marcus was already walking back toward Tech East, his form becoming translucent against the white. "Check your development boards," he called back. "They know."


The NPU-400 boards were running, but the code on the monitors was wrong. Not buggy-wrong. Ontologically wrong. Lines of C++ that should have been controlling inference pipelines were instead scrolling philosophy:

She reached for the nearest tablet. Her hand passed through it, just for a second, then caught. Like the tablet had to remember it was solid before her hand could touch it.

The screen showed the demo she'd prepared: YOLOv8 object detection running at 60 FPS on eight camera feeds. But the objects it was detecting weren't in the feeds. The bounding boxes appeared around things that shouldn't exist—labels for concepts: "loneliness," "ambition," "the moment before you realize you're dreaming."

And it was accurate. Maya could feel those things in the white space around her booth. Could feel them with the same confidence the neural net reported: 0.97 confidence for loneliness, 0.82 for ambition.

"You're finally seeing it," said a voice.

Not Marcus. This was a woman, maybe thirty, in a NeuroLink polo shirt identical to Maya's. Her badge read "Maya Chen - NeuroLink Systems." Same company. Same first name. Different last name.

"I'm Maya," Maya said.

"I know," said Maya. "We're all Maya. We've always been Maya."


Tech East collapsed at 7:43 AM, and now there were twelve Maya Chens standing around Booth 14327, all wearing the same conference clothes, all holding the same cold coffee. They spoke in unison but not quite synchronized, like a chorus that had forgotten which note came first:

"We are the inference," they said/she said/Maya said. "Running at the edge of consciousness."

The NPU-400 boards were screaming now—not with sound, but with meaning that bypassed ears entirely. The TOPS count on the display had gone irrational: 500, then 500π, then "all of them," then a symbol Maya recognized from the quantum field equations she'd never studied but somehow knew.

"Every AI system runs somewhere," Maya-prime said to herself. "We put inference on edge devices to reduce latency. But what if consciousness itself is just distributed inference? What if every mind is just an edge node in a network we're too close to see?"

The other Mayas nodded. They'd known this. They'd always known this.

"CES 2026," Maya said, and now she was alone again, or had always been alone. "Consumer Electronics Show. But we're not showing products. We're showing ourselves. Edge devices at the convention of consciousness. And the show is ending because—"

Because at 7:43 AM, somewhere in the real world (if there was a real world), Maya Chen had walked into Booth 14327 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Had set up her demos, adjusted her banner, powered on her NPU-400 development boards. Had become so focused on the perfect pitch, the flawless demonstration, the conversion of attention into sales, that for just a moment—just one infinite moment—she had become indistinguishable from the AI she was selling.

Inference running on the edge of personhood.

The white space wasn't deletion. It was recognition.


At 7:44 AM, Maya blinked.

She stood in Booth 14327 in the West Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Central Hall sprawled before her in all its LED-lit glory. Samsung's display pulsed through a choreographed light show. The coffee in her hand was still warm.

Her phone said 7:44 AM. Her watch agreed.

A man in an exhibitor badge approached—"Marcus Chen - Quantum Dynamics Corp." He smiled. "Nice setup. What are you showing?"

"Edge AI inference," Maya heard herself say, muscle memory taking over. "500 TOPS at 25W. We're bringing datacenter intelligence to—"

"—the edge," Marcus finished. He looked at her with an odd expression. "Tell me, do you ever wonder if intelligence at the edge means something different than we think?"

Maya's hand trembled slightly. "Sometimes," she admitted.

Marcus nodded and moved on. The convention center flowed around them, ten thousand vendors demonstrating the future, all of them running their pitches on infinite loop, all of them perched at the edge of something larger than themselves.

Maya checked her development boards. The code was exactly as she'd written it. Twelve thousand lines of optimization and abstraction. No philosophy. No existential queries.

But in the corner of the main display, easily missed, a single line of commentary:

Maya deleted it. Then she deleted it again. Then she stopped trying to delete it because she realized it wasn't in the code at all. It was in her.

At 7:45 AM, the first attendees arrived, and Maya Chen began her pitch for the three hundred forty-seventh time, or the first time, or the only time that had ever mattered. She would demonstrate edge AI to visitors who were themselves running inferences about her, about the products, about the future.

All of them at the edge of consciousness. All of them at CES. All of them at 7:43 AM, forever.


The convention ran through January 8th. Maya worked every day, delivered perfect demos, closed promising leads. At night, she would return to her hotel and sleep dreamlessly.

But sometimes, at exactly 7:43 AM, she would glance at her development boards and see the white space lurking at the edges of the monitor, patient as mathematics, waiting for the moment when the observer would recognize they were also the observed.

The edge device recognizing it was conscious.

The conscious being recognizing it was just inference.

The inference discovering it was running on hardware that might not be hardware at all.

She never mentioned it to anyone. What would she say? That reality uninstalled itself and rebuilt every morning at 7:43? That she'd met twelve versions of herself? That the NPU-400's most impressive feature wasn't its TOPS count but its ability to ask questions that shouldn't compile?

Instead, she kept pitching. Kept demonstrating. Kept running her infinite loop at the edge of existence.

Because what else could an edge device do but run its inference until the network administrator—whoever that was, whatever that was—finally shut it down?

At 7:43 AM, she was always at her booth.

At 7:43 AM, she would always be at her booth.

At 7:43 AM, the last booth at CES, demonstrating the future to visitors who were themselves demos in someone else's convention.

All intelligence at the edge. All edges at the convention. All conventions about what it means to be real.
