Marcus Chen had been Meridian Systems' lead architect for seven years. Marcus felt the chair's low positioning more acutely than usual.

David turned the laptop screen toward him. "Forty-seven PRs. Compute costs for the agent: $847. That's total. All eleven days."

Marcus's salary, benefits included, was $247,000 a year. Roughly $950 per working day.

"So the agent did three months of my work in eleven days for less than what I earn in a single day."

"I wouldn't frame it that—"

"How would you frame it?"

David closed the laptop. "I'd frame it as the agent handles the implementation work so that someone like you — someone who understands the system architecture, the business context, the why behind every design decision — can focus on the work that actually requires human judgment."

"The agent wrote the circuit breaker pattern I hadn't thought of."

David didn't have an answer for that.


Chapter 4: The Architecture of Absence

Marcus spent the next three days doing something he hadn't done in years: nothing. Or rather, nothing that produced output. He attended his regular meetings, answered emails, participated in sprint planning. But every task that appeared in his queue, he checked first to see if AgentOne had already started on it.

It usually had.

On Thursday, Marcus had lunch with Elena Rodriguez, the database team lead. They sat in the cafeteria that overlooked the parking lot, eating salads that cost too much for what they were.

"Does that bother you?"

On Friday morning, Marcus found a meeting invitation from HR. The subject line was "Career Development Discussion — Confidential." The attendees were Marcus, David Park, and a woman named Sarah Kim from People Operations whose title contained the word "transformation."

He almost didn't go. The architecture of the meeting — its time slot, its attendees, its euphemistic subject line — told him everything he needed to know before he opened the door.

But Marcus was a systems architect. He understood that you can't fix a bug by ignoring the error log.

Marcus looked at the job description again. The responsibilities were clear: define agent permissions, design review workflows, establish quality gates, monitor agent behavior, and intervene when autonomous decisions exceed defined boundaries.

It was, he thought, the most honest job description he'd ever read. The company was telling him, in writing, that the machines would do the work and his job would be to watch them do it.

"Of course."


Chapter 6: The Architecture

Marcus drove home the long way, through streets he'd memorized years ago but rarely noticed. He parked in his garage and sat in the dark for eleven minutes, which was precisely the amount of time it had taken AgentOne to resolve the authentication middleware issue that had been on his backlog for four months.

He thought about architecture. Not software architecture — the other kind. The kind where someone designs a building and then other people construct it, and the architect's value isn't in laying bricks but in knowing which bricks go where and why.

He thought about Elena's comment. The weight she didn't know she was carrying.

He thought about the forty-seven pull requests and the $847 in compute costs and the zero defects and the circuit breaker pattern he hadn't thought of.

Then he opened his laptop and wrote an email to David Park. Two sentences:

I'll take the role. But I want one condition: the agents report to me, not the other way around.

David's reply came in three minutes. One word.

Deal.
