The Reading
The machine read every paper ever written about her mother's disease in a single night. Maya still had to be the one to hold the pipette - and to call home.
The hypothesis arrived at 2:14 in the morning, and Maya was the only person awake to read it.
She had not meant to be at the lab. She had come back for her phone, left charging by the centrifuge, and stayed because the building at night had a quality her apartment lacked — a hum, a sense of work continuing whether or not she participated. The agent had been running since six. By the time she sat down, it had read the literature.
All of it. That was the part she still could not make ordinary in her mind. Every paper ever published on dry age-related macular degeneration — the thousands of them, the good and the wrong and the forgotten — read and cross-referenced and weighed in the hours she had spent eating a bad sandwich and arguing with her brother on the phone about their mother. The machine had spent the evening doing what Maya had spent eleven years doing, and it had finished.
On the screen, in the calm gray typeface the company favored, was a proposal.
Hypothesis: ripasudil, a Rho-kinase inhibitor approved for glaucoma, may restore phagocytic function in retinal pigment epithelial cells in dAMD. No prior literature proposes this indication. Suggested validation: phagocytosis assay in primary RPE culture, dose range attached. Estimated experimental turnaround: nine days.
She read it three times.
The strange thing was not that the idea was good. The strange thing was that it was hers — or it was the idea she would have had, eventually, if she had been cleverer or luckier or had another decade. Ripasudil. A drug that already existed, already sat on pharmacy shelves in another country for another part of the eye, repurposed sideways into the disease that was, very slowly, taking her mother's face away from her.
Her mother had stopped being able to read in March.
Not all at once. That was the cruelty of dAMD — it did not blind you, it erased the center of things and left the edges, so that her mother could still see the doorway but not the person standing in it, could see the table but not the words on the page she had loved. She had been a copy editor for forty years. She had made her living inside the center of the visual field, in the fine grain of text, and the disease had chosen, with what felt like malice, exactly that.
"I can see you're frowning," her mother had said on the phone that night, which was not true; her mother could only hear that Maya was frowning, could only assemble her daughter now out of voice and memory. "Don't frown about me. Frown about your experiments."
"They're not frowning experiments."
"Everything you do is a frowning experiment, sweetheart. You've frowned since you were four."
Maya had not told her about the agent. She did not know how to explain to a woman losing her sight that a machine could now read faster than any human who had ever lived, and that this machine had been pointed, among ten thousand other things, at her mother's specific darkness. It sounded like a promise, and Maya had spent eleven years learning not to make promises about biology.
By three in the morning she had the protocol open beside the proposal, comparing.
She kept waiting to feel replaced. That was the feeling everyone warned you about now, the one in all the articles — the scientist made redundant by the system that did her thinking. Her postdoc, Daniel, talked about it constantly, half joking, refreshing the discourse on his phone between runs. They automated the fun part, he'd said last week. The reading, the guessing, the part where you get to be smart. They left us the dishes.
But sitting in the dark with the machine's hypothesis in front of her, Maya did not feel replaced. She felt something harder to name. The agent had read everything and proposed a beautiful idea, and the idea was, at this moment, worth precisely nothing. It was a sentence. It was a guess dressed in citations. Whether ripasudil actually did anything to a living retinal cell was a question the machine could not answer, would never be able to answer, because answering it required hands and cells and nine days of the slow, dumb, irreplaceable patience of the physical world.
The machine had read the literature. Someone still had to read the cells.
She found she was, despite everything, smiling.
She started the culture herself the next morning, which she did not have to do. She had two technicians and a postdoc; the whole point of her seniority was that she no longer had to thaw her own cells at seven a.m. with her coat still on. But she wanted her hands on this one. She wanted to be the one who plated the RPE cells, who made up the dose series, who labeled the wells in her own cramped handwriting that the agent could not have produced and could not read.
Daniel found her at it. "You're doing bench work," he said, the way he might have said you're on the roof.
"The agent proposed something. Repurposing. For dAMD."
He came and looked over her shoulder at the screen, and she watched his face do what hers had done at two a.m. — the quick read, the recognition, the small recalibration. "Huh," he said. "That's actually elegant." A pause. "That's the one your mom has."
She had not realized he knew. "Yeah."
He was quiet for a moment. Then he pulled a stool over, not to take the work from her but to sit beside it, and said, "Walk me through the assay. If we're doing this I want it clean. I want it so clean nobody can argue with it." And that — the clean, the refusal to let a hopeful result be a sloppy one — was the part no machine had taken from either of them. The agent could generate a thousand hypotheses before lunch. It could not care whether the answer was true. Caring whether it was true was still, stubbornly, a human job.
The nine days were the longest part, and the machine made them longer, in a way, because it had nothing to do during them. It had finished its work in an evening. The cells took their own time. Maya thought about that a great deal that week — how they had built a thing that thought at the speed of light and then handed its thoughts to a process that ran at the speed of biology, the speed of growing, the speed of a body. You could not rush a cell. You could not rush a trial. You could not rush her mother's retina, which was failing at exactly the pace it chose.
She called home every night. Her mother could not read, so Maya read to her — which felt, that week, like a small holy reversal, the editor's daughter giving back the center of the page. They were working through a mystery novel her mother had bought in print before March and never finished. Maya did the voices badly. Her mother corrected her pronunciation, which meant her mother was still her mother, all the way down, in the parts the disease could not reach.
"How's the frowning experiment," her mother asked on the seventh night.
"Seven days in. Two more."
"And what will it tell you, when it's done?"
Maya considered lying, the comfortable lie, the it might help you, Mom. She did not. "Probably nothing useful for years," she said. "If it works it's a result in a dish. The dish isn't a person. There's a whole long road after the dish, and most things die on it."
"But you're doing it anyway."
"I'm doing it anyway."
"Good," her mother said, with the certainty she'd always had about everything that mattered. "Do the slow part right. You were always good at the slow part."
On the ninth day the assay came up positive.
It was not dramatic. Science almost never is; the truth arrives as a number in a column, a difference between two conditions that is either real or noise, and you have to do the statistics before you let yourself feel anything. Maya did the statistics first. She made herself do them first. Then she let herself look at the plate — the treated cells clearing their debris, the function the disease took away coming back, just slightly, just measurably, in a dish under fluorescent light at the bench where she had thawed the cells herself.
Ripasudil increased phagocytic activity. The machine's guess, two a.m. and beautiful and worth nothing, was now worth something. It was worth a result. It was a long, long way from being worth a cure — she knew that road, knew how many candidates walked partway down it and fell — but it was no longer nothing, and the thing that had turned it from nothing into something was nine days and two pairs of hands.
Daniel looked at the numbers over her shoulder and said, very quietly, "Clean." The highest praise he had.
Maya took off her gloves. She did not call the press office or the company or the authors who would, eventually, put the machine's name and hers on the same paper. She called her mother.
"It's late," her mother said. "Is something wrong?"
"No," Maya said. "Nothing's wrong. I wanted to read to you."
"You read to me last night."
"I know." She sat down at the bench, in the dark again, the building humming its night hum around her. "I want to read to you anyway."
And she did — not the result, which would have meant nothing to her mother and everything to no one yet, but the next chapter of the bad mystery, doing the voices badly, while her mother corrected her from four hundred miles away in the dark they now, in their different ways, both lived in. The machine had read everything ever written about her mother's disease in a single night. Maya read one chapter, slowly, out loud, to one person.
It was not the faster reading. But it was, she thought, the one that the night had actually been for.
