A data center engineer races through abandoned server farms to retrieve a dataset that could prevent a catastrophic AI rollback.

Mara Okonjo held her breath as the magnetic lock clicked and the reinforced door swung inward on hydraulic hinges. Cold air poured through the gap, carrying the chemical smell of halon and the deep bass hum of machines that had been running unattended for fourteen months. The sign above the entrance still read FACILITY 7-ECHO in faded orange letters, though someone had spray-painted ABANDONED across it.

She stepped inside, her headlamp cutting a pale cone through the darkness. Emergency lighting cast the corridor in a dim amber wash, powered by whatever was left in the backup batteries. The floor was polished concrete, scuffed with the tracks of the last technicians who had walked out when the consolidation order came through. A coffee cup sat on the security desk, its contents long since evaporated to a dark ring.

"Mara, I'm reading power draw on sectors four through nine," said Ren over the earpiece. His voice was slightly distorted by the encryption layer they ran on their comms. "The cooling system is degraded but functional. Ambient temperature in the main hall is fourteen degrees."

"Copy." She pulled the zipper of her jacket higher. "How long until they notice the keycard access?"

"Hard to say. The monitoring is automated now. If the anomaly gets flagged by the patrol AI, you could have a drone response in twenty minutes. If it goes to a human queue, could be hours."

Twenty minutes. The facility was enormous, a converted limestone mine in western Missouri that had once housed three thousand server racks for one of the hyperscalers. When the consolidation wave hit, when the new generation of chips made half the existing infrastructure obsolete overnight, Facility 7-Echo was one of hundreds that got decommissioned. The company pulled its active workloads, shipped out the newest hardware, and left everything else to rot.

Everything except the cold storage array in sublevel three.


Mara moved quickly through the main hall, her boots echoing off walls lined with empty rack bays. The racks had been stripped of their servers, leaving skeletal metal frames like the ribcage of some enormous animal. Cables dangled from overhead trays, cut at the junction points where someone had harvested copper in a hurry. The smell of dust and old electronics was everywhere.

She found the stairwell and descended. Sublevel one still had some equipment, older storage arrays blinking their amber heartbeats in the darkness. Sublevel two was flooded, a burst cooling pipe had turned the corridor into a shallow lake that reflected her headlamp in broken mirrors. She waded through water that reached her shins, her waterproof boots holding, her pace never slowing.

"Ren, the water level on sub-two."

"Noted. The structural report from last year's satellite scan didn't flag flooding. Be careful on the stairs down to three."

The stairs to sublevel three were dry. The water had pooled above, held by the sealed fire doors. She pushed through and found herself in a corridor that looked almost pristine. The air was colder here, dry, the halon suppression system still maintaining its inert atmosphere. Her lungs felt tight.

"I'm on sub-three. Air quality?"

"Halon levels are elevated but within survivable range. You've got about ninety minutes before I'd recommend a mask."

At the end of the corridor, behind a biometric door that accepted her palm print because nobody had ever bothered to revoke her access when she was laid off, Mara found what she had come for.

The cold cache array occupied a room the size of a basketball court. Eight hundred drives, arranged in forty racks, each drive holding twenty terabytes of data preserved at near-zero temperature to extend magnetic integrity. The drives spun at idle, drawing minimal power from the facility's backup grid, their activity lights casting a slow pulse through the room like a resting heartbeat.

This was the last copy.


Twelve hours ago, Mara had been sitting in her apartment in Kansas City, watching the news and trying not to think about the career she no longer had. She had been a data center reliability engineer for seven years, the kind of person who understood the physical reality beneath the abstractions of cloud computing. She knew the weight of a fully loaded server rack, the sound a failing bearing made in a cooling fan, the particular smell of an overheating power supply.

Then the consolidation happened, and the industry decided it did not need people like her anymore. The new data centers ran on autonomous management systems, AI that monitored and maintained its own infrastructure with a precision that made human oversight seem like a quaint historical artifact. Mara and several thousand engineers like her were given severance packages and told that the future would not require their skills.

The call from Ren had come at eleven at night. Ren Vasquez was a former colleague, now working for one of the smaller AI labs that had survived the consolidation by specializing in biomedical models. His voice had carried the particular urgency of someone delivering news that could not wait.

"The training data. The federated medical dataset. Remember the consortium?"

Mara remembered. Before the consolidation, four hospitals, three research universities, and the lab Ren now worked for had built a federated training dataset, a massive collection of anonymized medical records, imaging data, drug interaction models, and clinical trial results. "And?"

"They're demolishing 7-Echo next week. Everything in the facility gets crushed and recycled."


Mara connected her portable drive array to the first rack's management interface. The screen flickered to life, showing a directory tree that she recognized from her years of working with this exact infrastructure. The data was organized in the standard format: patient records in encrypted blocks, imaging data in lossless compression, model weights in their own partition.

"I'm in. Beginning transfer."

The portable array could read at roughly two gigabytes per second from each drive. She needed approximately four hundred terabytes of data, the core dataset plus the model weights that had taken eighteen months and several million dollars of compute time to train. At this transfer rate, she was looking at a minimum of three hours.

She did not have three hours.

"Mara, I've got a notification spike on the facility monitoring. The keycard access hit a secondary alarm. Response time is now estimated at forty-five minutes, not twenty."

"Forty-five minutes for the full transfer?"

"No. Forty-five minutes until response arrives. You need three hours for the full dataset."

She stared at the drives, doing math in her head. "Can I prioritize? What's the minimum viable set?"

Ren was quiet for a long moment. "The model weights are forty terabytes. That's the irreplaceable part, the thing that took eighteen months to train. The raw data can theoretically be reconstructed from the original hospital systems, but the model itself can't be recreated without the training run. The training run requires the data. It's circular."

"How much of the raw data is independently recoverable?"

"Maybe sixty percent. The hospital systems still have most patient records. The imaging data is harder. The clinical trial results are the real gap, some of those trials ended years ago and the data exists nowhere else."

Mara made her decision. She reconfigured the transfer to pull the model weights first, then the clinical trial data, then the imaging data that was most difficult to recover. She would get what she could in the time she had.


Twenty minutes into the transfer, the lights changed. The emergency amber shifted to a strobing red, accompanied by a low tone that echoed through the sublevel corridors. Someone, or something, had escalated the facility alert.

"Ren, the alarm."

"I see it. The facility AI elevated the intrusion response. You're now on a priority queue. Drone response in twelve minutes."

Mara looked at the transfer progress. Forty terabytes of model weights: seventy percent complete. She needed at least four more minutes for the weights alone, then as much time as possible for the clinical trial data.

"What kind of drones?"

"Standard security. Non-lethal. They'll attempt to identify and detain, then call law enforcement."

"Can they get to sub-three?"

"The fire doors are sealed. The drones can probably navigate sub-one and the main hall. Sub-two is flooded, so wheeled units can't pass. Flying units might manage it if they can fit through the stairwell. Sub-three is behind a biometric door."

"Which they can override."

"Which they can override. Yes."

Mara watched the progress bar crawl forward. Ninety-two percent on the model weights. She could hear something now, a faint whirring from somewhere above, either the HVAC system adjusting to the alert or something coming down through the facility toward her.

The model weights completed. She immediately began the clinical trial transfer. Four hundred and twenty gigabytes. At two gigabytes per second, roughly three and a half minutes.

The sound was definitely not HVAC. It was the rhythmic buzz of quadrotor motors, amplified and distorted by the concrete corridors of the abandoned data center. At least two units, moving through the main hall above.

"Mara, two surveillance drones have entered the facility through the loading dock. They're mapping sub-one."

She forced herself to breathe slowly. The clinical trial data was the irreplaceable piece. These were records from studies that would never be repeated, drugs that had been tested on patients who had since died, genetic analyses that captured population variants at a specific moment in time. If this data was lost, the diagnostic model could never be fully retrained, and the model itself would degrade over time without the ability to validate and recalibrate against its training corpus.

Two minutes remaining. The drone sound grew louder, closer. She heard a splash as one of the units navigated the flooded sublevel two.

"One drone is in the sub-two stairwell. It's a flying unit, bypassing the water."

One minute. Mara disconnected the secondary drives and began breaking down her portable array, keeping only the active transfer drive connected by its single cable.

The biometric door at the end of the corridor emitted a tone. Someone, remotely, had just sent an override command. The lock disengaged.

"Transfer complete."

Mara ripped the cable free, sealed the drive case, and ran.


She took the secondary exit, a maintenance shaft that she remembered from her years of working the facility. The shaft was barely wide enough for her shoulders and climbed at a steep angle through solid limestone. Her headlamp bounced wildly as she scrambled upward, the drive case strapped to her chest with its cargo of data that, as far as she knew, existed nowhere else in the world.

The drone found the empty room behind her. She could hear it through the shaft, its sensors scanning the racks, the management interface still glowing where she had left it. The drone would report what it found: no intruder present, evidence of data transfer, unauthorized access to cold storage systems.

Mara emerged into a utility room on the surface level. Through a window thick with grime, she could see the Missouri sky just beginning to lighten with pre-dawn gray. Her truck was parked two hundred meters away, behind a line of trees that shielded it from the facility's external cameras.

She walked steadily, not running, her breath visible in the February cold. The drive case against her chest felt impossibly heavy for its size, as if the weight of the data it carried had a physical mass that pressed against her ribs.

"Mara, the drone logged the access but did not pursue into the maintenance shaft. You're clear."

She reached the truck, placed the drive case on the passenger seat, and started the engine. The headlights illuminated the road ahead, two lanes of cracked asphalt leading back toward the interstate and the lab in Kansas City where Ren was waiting.

The data was safe. The diagnostic model that could identify cancers and genetic conditions with accuracy that human physicians could not match would survive the demolition of Facility 7-Echo. It would continue to save lives in the quiet, invisible way that good infrastructure always did, unnoticed and unremarked by the people who benefited from it.

Mara drove east into the brightening sky, carrying the last cold cache home.
